Barron's: 5 REITs Worth a Look

According to Barron's: The real estate industry, which knows a something about the importance of location, soon will be able to boast a prime spot in the investing world: a sector of its own in the major market indexes.


MIKE KIRBY, chairman and director of research at Newport Beach, Calif.-based Green Street Advisors, which has been tracking real estate and REITs for 30 years, highlights the firm’s “portfolio of buys”: Equity Residential (EQR), which owns and manages apartments in fast-growing markets with high barriers to entry; General Growth Properties (GGP), a high-end mall operator with the nation’s second-largest portfolio; Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRT), a best-in-class strip-mall operator; and Public Storage (PSA), the largest self-storage operator. All will be in the new index. Green Street’s picks boast sound balance sheets, low cost of capital, strong markets, and the ability to add value.
